Is Your Favourite Influencer Good or Bad?
I'm sure many of us have an influencer we admire or even aspire to be like. But if you've clicked on this post, you might have some doubts about their authenticity…
While this isn't a comprehensive list, I’ve put together a few green flags and red flags to help you navigate the world of online influencers.
Let’s start with the red flags so we can finish on a positive note!
🚩 Red Flags:
Speaking in absolutes – When it comes to training and nutrition, there are very few absolutes. The world is diverse, and it’s highly unlikely that one approach works for everyone. Some things may work for the majority, but claiming something applies to everyone is a definite red flag.
Heavily pushing one agenda – This ties into the point above. If an influencer insists that their training method, diet plan, or life hack is the one that will make all the difference, that’s a warning sign. How could they possibly know what works for everyone?
Pushing a narrative that benefits them financially – This one should make you think twice. If an influencer tells you that X and Y are bad for you, but conveniently, they sell Z (which is the only solution), that’s a red flag. Of course, some influencers sell reputable products (check out my Top 3 Supplements blog 😉), and they need to make a living. But if a product sounds too good to be true, it probably is.
Unwilling to change their mind in the face of evidence – This is a tough one for many people. When we strongly believe something, it can be hard to accept contradicting evidence. We’ve all been guilty of this at some point! But real credibility comes from admitting when you're wrong, rather than doubling down on a flawed belief.
Alright, now for the green flags!
✅ Green Flags:
Open to differing viewpoints – If an influencer holds a strong belief but can accept opposing views (especially when backed by evidence) without being hostile, that’s a sign of intelligence and integrity.
Recognised as an expert—without self-proclaiming it – If someone is widely regarded as knowledgeable by their peers but doesn’t constantly call themselves an "expert," that’s a good sign. True experts understand that there’s always more to learn.
Confident but not arrogant – Even when strong evidence supports their views, they remain cautious, using terms like likely, possibly, or in most cases instead of making sweeping statements. This shows a nuanced understanding of their field.
Encourages critical thinking – A good influencer doesn’t just tell you what to believe; they encourage you to think for yourself. They provide sources, explain their reasoning, and invite discussion rather than expecting blind trust.
